“I haven’t talked to you in a while you know. I’m just realizing that.” David said.
“I know, it’s just that I’ve been incredible busy.”
“I know, don’t worry. How much time left?”
“Until what?”
“Until, erm… rest?”
“I don’t know that David. I’m afraid it will never end.”
“It will bro, don’t worry.”
“I know it will, but the thing is, I also know how much time I have left before it ends, and all the things I have to do.”
“But there’s an end.”
“It’s not about the end, it’s the in-between.”
“Well, there's….”
“It’s all about the in-between, in everything. Plans, dreams, desires, relations.”
“There’s Mac&Chesse in the microwave.”

Come here now
Where I realize
I am not
Actually finding anything.
Asking myself about
Fading in effects
Rambling between you.

And you thought I was being melodramatic when I told you I was sad, angry and disapointed. You always underestimated my face as I told you a simple yes, or gave you a sight. You thought I was joking, and so did I, but this,... This a'int no joke, Not this time. Im done with it, and be sure i'll be back. Not to see you, not to touch you. I'll be back in your thoughts, when you think theres nothing you could've done, I'll be there to tell you wrong. You could've changed this story... I hope you feel bad. Goodbye Samuel.

That was clear... IT WAS... and it was horrible. David had never been in such a difficult situation. He wanted to hug Samuel as he cried in the edge of the bed, looking at Caroline's letter. It was too bad to be true. Besides, David sucked at this, the wanted to call Mark, he always knew what to do, he was like magic Mark.

David remembered what Mark had told him, Samuel couldn't have been his brother, he looked specially old in his current state. Insted of thinking about Samuel, David was thinking about her, she had believed it, and now he noticed that wasn't possible. So, he waited, doing nothing, scratching a spot he had seen in his black tux, as he saw the antique furniture of the funeral home and as he waited for Mark.

“David Monahan…?” said the lady who was caring the files. “David Monahan?!” she said again in a louder tone after some seconds of waiting an answer.

“Yes, sorry I’m here…” he answered as he woke up of his day dreaming.

“ Great, you’re next. Mr. Volkogonov will be receiving you in a couple minutes. Do you have everything ready?”

“Erm… The custom form, blue and yellow slips answered, ID…” he listed.

“… and passport-sized recent photographs.” She completed with an approval tone.

“Yes, yes. “ He searched into one of his pockets taking out a small bag containing 4 photographs, two of them black and white, and other two in color. They both stood there crossing few uncomfortable sights and occasional smiles until she looked at her clock. Two minutes had passed and she said,

“Follow me.” They crossed the hall and they stopped at a mahogany door. The women knocked and a loud deep voice with a foreign accent was heard. “Come in.” David was scared as the young women opened the door and let him in. We was crap at it, he always fucked up job interviews.

The End

There were some footsteps approaching to the door, then some keys, then the knob turning, and then he opened the door.

“Where have you been!” said David, “I’ve been waiting like crazy, you’re not answering your phone, and dinner is cold.”

“Dinner David? That’s Mac&Cheesse.”

“Dinner Mark… where have you been?”

“Please don’t ask me that.” Said Mark, as his face suddenly change showing sadness.

“Mark, are you alright?”

“Not really.”

“And you don’t want to talk about it?”

“Not really”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll be better tomorrow.”

“Some Mac&Cheesse then?”

“Yes, please.”

After they where done, Mark headed to his room, where he took his phone and called Rebecca. She did not answer, maybe there was nothing left to do, he thought and he went to sleep.

We woke up at 3:00am, he went to the kitchen, opened the fridge and took a beer. He turned on the living room’s TV and there was this infomercial about vacuum cleaners. Then David came out of his room and did exactly the same.

15 minutes later, Mark got back into his room…

April 14

When something ends, it’s the beginning of a whole new thing, so they say. Truth is, I couldn’t see it that way, not then anyways. This ending had been, lets say, different. I’ve ended lots of things in my life before. A drawing, a chat, a letter, a story… But never something like this, something that really made want to go back, and stay there. Never to move. I found myself suspended in this chaos of ideas, of memories.

What scared me the most wasn’t the ending by it self, neither the so called beginning, but in this specific situation, the uncertainty of the no beginning, there was a chance this was it, just like dying, when there’s nothing after, or at least, if there is, you know nothing about it. It was this precise uncertainty that kept me in a perpetual state of shock (understating perpetual as some days, of course, or maybe months).

once again...

Again with the mumbling

“Well, how are you supposed to tell someone he’s wrong when you know he isn’t but still you need to?”

“Erm, you just say it…” said David

“No, it’s not that simple… definitely not THAT simple…” mumbled Mark

“Well it can be, first of all, I think you should have some really big-nice reasons to do so.”

“Like what?”

I DON’T KNOW!, It’s your thing remember…?!?!” he shouted in a desperate tone, which wasn’t very usual in David.

“Well…”

“I can’t really do something unless you tell me what are talking about, or tell me about the situation.”

“I know that, but the thing is, I can’t tell you.” Mark sat on the living room chair and covered his face with his hands. “I don’t really know what to do…”

“I know now… It’s about Rebecca right?”

“No, for Christ sake… That was over, about, what? 1 year ago?”

“Seven months, I can’t believe you don’t know that, and I do ”

“Sorry but, again? Who’s the weird one here?” he showed his sarcastic face.

“Mark, even if you forgot, Rebecca was very important for you…”

“Long ago, and unlike you, I have the ability to move on.”

“Thank you VERY MUCH Mark…” he said as he stood up, almost threw the chair and left the room.

“You’re VERY welcome David…”

She did.. believed it

“And yet, there was this time where everyone believed he was my brother” he said in a serious voice he used when he was being sarcastic.
“No there wasn’t” Mark answered
“OK, not everyone, but, do you remember the old lady in the supermarket, that told him to help his brother, ergo me, ergo she thought he was my brother, ergo…
“Stop saying ergo..”
“OK”
“First, she was old… and second, I’ve always thought she was trying to hit on him.”
“Stop it, she was not.” he answered this time really serious.
“C’mon David! He’s like… what, 50?
“He’s 49.”
“Right! and you’re… like… oh yes! 23!”
“I know, but still we could’ve been brothers..”
“Yeah! Or he could’ve been your dad, which by the way is 52”
“That’s not the point Mark.”
“Then?”
“The point is, SHE believed it.”
“Who?”
“Don’t who? me, Mark.”
“Ahhh that who…”
“Yes, THAT who…”
“Well, then again, why are we discussing this David?”
“Never mind” he said as we walked to the car.
